SWPL2: Glasgow Girls knock Accies off Top Spot

Sunday 26th of June welcomed the final game of the first half of the season for Glasgow Girls. A top of the table clash against a strong Hamilton Accies team. The game promised excitement from the get go with the only thing separating the two teams coming into the break was hamilton’s goal difference.

With the two teams ready, the game kicked off with a fast pace from the start, with both teams eager to gain the three points.

The first half saw Glasgow Girls threatened early on with a long range free kick which was met on the Hamilton attack with a strong header which was seen wide, however once settling, Glasgow Girls showed some excellent parts of play down the left hand side working from striker Lauren Evans into Chloe Docherty who set the ball for Leigh Ferrol who couldn’t get the finish.

The first half appeared very end to end with no real threats on goal from either side.

A few long range efforts made from Glasgow’s Chloe Docherty and Sam McManus but the Hamilton keeper pulled off some excellent saves. Late the first half Glasgow’s Leigh Ferrol suffered a head knock, feared worse than it was, the referee blew for half time.

Half Time 0 - 0

The second half seemed to pick up in pace for the Glasgow side as only five minutes in they were awarded a free kick around 25 yards out after some pressing play.

Quick tactical play between Charmaine McGuire and Emma Malavin had Charmaine able to swing in a ball to the six yard box which was met by Chloe Docherty’s header. the ball hitting the post and into the back of the net. 1-0.


The game settled back into play with Glasgow in the lead. Glasgow appeared to be dominating until the 77th minute where an in-swinging ball on the Hamilton attack from the right hand side was caught by Glasgow defender Megan Logan’s head which deflected into the net. 1-1.

The last ten minutes proved very vital in the game with end to end excitement.



Both sides having their fair chance to take the victory home. However it was an excellent pass from Nicola Hardie through to Sam McManus which was the key moment as Sam took excellent control of the ball and showed great desire as she took it past the tiring defence and placed the ball past the Hamilton goalkeeper. 2-1.



With only 4 minutes remaining, Glasgow maintained possession until the final whistle.

A very tough game with some outstanding play. And a win that takes Glasgow Girls top of the table heading into the second half of the season.
